A water main break at a busy midtown Anchorage intersection has stalled traffic, and fouled city streets. Anchorage police are warning drivers to avoid the Tudor Road and Old Seward highway area until further notice, and the traffic snarl my continue into commute hours.

According to the Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility (AWWU), an Anchorage contractor bored through a water main at Old Seward Highway and Tudor Road. The AWWU maintenance officials have responded and are working on isolating the break area, closing valves and re-routing water to limit the number of customers who may be without water. Until the break area is isolated, AWWU will not know how many customers will be without water.

APD is on scene to help direct traffic away from the area. Road Closures area as follows:

Northbound Old Seward: Closed at 50th Avenue. Exit Dowling or prior.

Southbound Old Seward: 1 lane open through the Tudor/Old Seward intersection. That lane is expected to be closed soon.

Westbound Tudor: Closed just after (west of) the bridge. Motorists can use both ramps to the north and southbound Seward Highway.

Eastbound Tudor: Closed at Denali.

This incident may affect the rush hour traffic.
